    [TUT] - Make Your Own Waving Flag

    Waving Flag

    Level:

    Author: 20past4

    In this tutorial you will learn how to

    Turn this:

    Into this:

    [Break= Steps 1 - 6]

    The Flag

    1) Create a new document 500px wide x 500px high
    2) Paste or create your flag in a new layer making sure to leave a bit of room on each side to allow for when we skew the picture later

    3) Make sure that your flag is only one layer then edit the “Layer Style” by either double clicking the layer or goto “Layer > Layer Properties”

    4) Turn on the gradient by checking the box next to “Gradient Overlay” and select that option so you can edit the gradient

    5) We are going to make our own gradient for the waving of flag by clicking on the gradient itself

    6) Now add a black color at location 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% by clicking on below the gradient a box will appear

    [Break= Steps 7 - 12]
    7) Then add a white color at location 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and select OK

    8) The settings for the gradient should be:
    • Blend Mode: Multiply
    • Opacity: 25%
    • Style: Relflected
    • Angle: +15
    • Scale: 150
    9) Now because we set the angle of the gradient to 15 degrees we need to set the flag to match, so goto “Edit > Transform Path > Perspective” and change the degrees of the image to 15 and apply

    10) Now that the flag has the shading all ready we need to add the wind effect so goto “Filter > Distort > Wave…”
    11) The settings should be:
    • Number of Generators: 1
    • Wavelength: Min=1 and Max=100
    • Amplitude: Min=1 and Max=80
    • Scale: Horiz.=1 and Vert.=15
    12) Before you select OK, you can adjust the amount of wind by adjusting the Vert up or down.

    [Break= Steps 13 & 19]
    Additional Detail

    13) Go back into the “Layer Style” of the flag layer by either double clicking the layer or goto “Layer > Layer Properties”
    14) Turn on the “Drop Shadow” and leave all the settings default

    15) Turn on Satin and change the color to black and the settings to:
    • Blend Mode: Color Burn
    • Opacity: 25%
    • Angle: -15
    • Distance: 20
    • Size: 25
    16) If you want it really windy grab the flag and drag it to the left so that only half of it is showing on the screen (this is to prevent any of the flag from getting cut off when we apply the filter)

    17) Apply the Shear filter from the Filter > Distort > Shear
    18) Click on the box with the dotted lines and drag from the middle to the first set of dotted lines to the right

    19) Done
