Real Bullet
Level:
Author: effectica
This tutorial will teach how to create a realistic bullet.
Allthough the object this tutorial is based on, might not interest everybody, the point of this tuorial is not only to teach you how to draw a bullet.
It shows you how you can make and apply realistic styles to shapes.
Make sure to save every gradient and style that is created in this tutorial, so you can use them in the future for anything else.
[Break= Steps 1 - 4]
1) Open a new document 300x400
2) You can fill the background layer with any colour you like. But for this tutorial I have used #D8D8D8
NOTE: we will start by drawing all the parts of the bullet, with no texture, just with a flat colour. After that we will
create the layer style used to make the realistic metal that the bullet is made of.
All patterns I used in this tutorial can be found in the downloads area >> HERE <<
Before starting this tutorial, please install these patterns.
3) Select the rounded rectangle tool. And set the following properties:
4) Set the foreground colour in the tools palette to a dark grey. For this tutorial I set it to #686868
[Break= Steps 5 - 8]
5) Create a new layer
6) On this new layer draw the body of the bullet:
7) Create a new layer
8) On this new layer draw one thin rectangle with the rounded rectangle tool, exactly as we did in STEP 2.
This is going to be the bottom part of the bullet. And place this shape as shown in the image below.
[Break= Steps 9 - 14]
9) Create a new layer
10) Repeat step 8 but this time draw a smaller rectangle, and place it just above the previous one.
11) Now lets draw the head of the bullet. From the tools palette, select the eliptical marquee tool
12) Fill it with colour. Once you move it away from the body of the bullet. You will see that we really just need a section of that
ellipse.
So we have to cut the exceeding part off.
13) Select the Rectangular matrquee tool, and select the part of the ellipse that you want to delete.
On your keyboard hit the delete button, to get rid of that section we have just selected.
14)Place the shape you have now, as shown in the image.
Ok finally we have the shape of the bullet, done !
Lets move on to the texture of the bullet.
To make it easier for us all. Lets name all the elements of the bullet shape1, shape2, shape 3 ....as follows:
[Break= Step 15]
15) Select the layer where SHAPE 3 is, and create a its style with the following settings
INNER GLOW
BEVEL and EMBOSS
BEVEL and EMBOSS (Gloss Contour mapping)
BEVEL and EMBOSS ---> Contour
BEVEL and EMBOSS ---> Contour (Gloss Contour mapping)
BEVEL and EMBOSS ---> Texture
As a pattern you can use anything that suites you, and then play with its "scale" and "depth" until you like what you see.
The pattern I used, is called pat4bullet_body.pat
COLOR OVERLAY
GRADIENT OVERLAY
Create the gradient with these Colour Stops Properties:
A:
Colour: #878787
Location: 0
B:
Colour: #f4fcfc
Location: 31
C:
Colour: #626262
Location: 62
D:
Colour: #a7a7a7
Location: 77
E:
Colour: #919191
Location: 100
Once you are done, finalize the gradient with these settings:
You have now the style ready. Make sure you save it because we are going to use it again.
To save the style, click on "NEW STYLE", name it and confirm.
[Break= Steps 16 - 18]
16) Select the layer where SHAPE 2 is, and apply to it the style we have just created.
We need to slightly modify it though. So open the blending options of this layer
Go to the Gradient Overlay and move the colour stopper of the second colour, to 23
Confirm all, because we are done also with this layer.
17) Select the layer where SHAPE 1 is, and apply to it the style we have just created.
We need to modify this too. So open the blending options and select the Inner Glow. Set its values as shown:
If you have done everything correctly, now you should have something looking like this:
We can now take care of tweaking the head of the bullet.
18) Select the layer where SHAPE 4 is and open its blending options. Set them as follows:
INNER GLOW
BEVEL and EMBOSS
BEVEL and EMBOSS (Gloss Contour mapping)
BEVEL and EMBOSS ---> CONTOUR
GRADIENT OVERLAY
Ok this style is done so confirm all.
You should have something looking like this:
[Break= Steps 19 - 25]
19) Now duplicate this layer that you are on, by right clicking on it as shown below:
20) Clear the style of this new layer by right clicking on it as shown below:
21) Open the blending options of this layer and set them as follows:
GRADIENT OVERLAY
22) Create a new empty layer and in the layers palette, select both this layer and the layer below it:
23) Merge the two layer together by pressing on your keyboard the keys CTRL + E.
24) Now set the blending mode of the layer you have just merged, to screen and opacity 80%:
25) Open the blending opions of this layer so we can assign to it some texture. Set this layers settings like so:
PATTERN OVERLAY
Use the pattern stucco3.pat
[Break= Steps 26 - 30]
26) In the layers palette select all the layers that contain the bullet shapes:
27) We now GROUP these layers into a folder by pressing CTRL + G on your keyboard (note: this shortcut works on Photoshop CS 2, I believe that
it is not the same for previous versions)
28) Duplicate the group
29) Select the lower GROUP and press on your keyboard the keys CTRL + E
30) Open the blending option of this layer that we have just achieved from merging the group, and set its properties like so:
DROP SHADOW
AND FINALLY WE ARE DONE
Feel free to show us in this thread what you came up with.
